John Singleton, the late filmmaker, dubbed Leimert Park the “Black Greenwich Village.” This historic neighborhood is commonly considered the cultural center for African Americans in Los Angeles. The subdivision was started in 1928 by developer Walter H. Leimert, and was one of Southern California’s first planned communities for upper- and middle-class families. With tree-lined streets, buried utility wires, and car traffic minimized near schools, Leimert Park was hailed as a model of urban planning. It’s state-of-the-art design features attracted homebuyers and over the course of several decades, Leimert Park became known for its authentic Afro-Caribbean cuisine, poetry jam nights, and its hip hop scene.
Famous former residents of Leimert Park include Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley, Ray Charles, and Ella Fitzgerald. Comprising two hundred and thirty acres, Leimert Park is located in South Los Angeles, California, and is centered around Leimert Village and its shops, bookstores, restaurants, and art galleries. Festivals and events are held here each year. And speaking of events, the Leimert Park Art Walk is a favorite among the locals and visitors alike. Held on the last Sunday of each month, this free event includes a drum circle, spoken word, and DJs, as well as local artisans, food, fashion, and art exhibitions at storefronts and spaces like the World Stage, Vision Theatre, and KAOS Network.
Further contributing to the appeal of Leimert Park homes, the neighborhood is only twenty to forty minutes from Downtown Los Angeles, and thirty to sixty minutes from Santa Monica, Century City, and Burbank. Even closer to Leimert Park real estate are its neighboring communities, which include Crenshaw and View Park-Windsor Hills on the west, Hyde Park on the south, Vermont Square and Exposition Park on the east, and Jefferson Park on the north.
